Sound and Vibration

The research group deals with the study of structural vibration and acoustics in machinery, means of transport, industrial products and musical instruments, with reference both to sound generation mechanisms at the source, and to the airborne and structure-borne propagation of sound. The main research topics are tyre/road noise, railway noise (with special focus on curve squeal and ground-borne vibration), cabin interior noise in ground vehicles and aircraft, appliance noise, musical acoustics. The research activity is approached through theoretical analyses, dedicated numerical models, and experimental tests in-lab and on-site. Particular importance is given to the development of simulation and testing tools, as well as to the definition of both passive and active noise control solutions. The research group has a strong commitment to collaboration with the industrial world and has been active since the early 2000s. It played a key role in the establishment of PSVL (Polimi Sound and Vibration Laboratory).
