Researcher

Gianluca Dall'Osto graduated from Politecnico di Milano in April 2020 in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology. From November 2020 to November 2021, he was a research fellow at the Department of Mechanics focusing on the capture and splitting of CO2 into molten carbonates and awarded with the “Premio Amulio Cipriani” for the results. In December 2024, he received the title of PhD in Mechanical Engineering and, in the same year, awarded with the “Premio Carlo Longaretti” by the Italian Association for Metallurgy for his achievements on the use of biogenic carbon sources to encourage the sustainable transition of the steel industry. Since April 2025, he has been working as an RTDa researcher at the Department of Mechanics of the Politecnico di Milano. His research focuses on the recovery of critical and strategic raw materials from steel industry residues (e.g. slag, dust, sludge) by pyrometallurgical processes using biogenic carbon sources. He is also involved in the physico-chemical characterization of these classes of materials, as well as the enrichment of the ferrous phase contained in the residues by hydrometallurgical processes, roasting and/or gravimetric separation. Finally, he is interested in the study of the change in the impact of the steel sector as a consequence of the substitution of fossil sources. The experience gained from participating in international projects (e.g. Horizon Europe, RFCS, EIT RawMaterials) and collaborating in research contracts with companies has led to the publication of several scientific papers in journals and participation in conferences of international importance.
