Marco Belfi was born in Milan in 1996. In March 2025, he earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering cum Laude from Politecnico di Milano. His doctoral research focused on the application of Quenching and Partitioning (QP) treatment to commercial high-strength steels. The aim was to optimize mechanical properties through precise microstructural control, with additional investigation into the applicability of the QP process to materials produced via additive manufacturing.
Previously, in April 2021, he obtained his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano. His Master’s thesis explored the effect of surface condition on the oxidation and precipitation behavior of Inconel 718. Part of this research was carried out at Universidad de Oviedo (Spain) during an Erasmus exchange program.
In 2024, he gained additional international experience as a Visiting Ph.D. student at TU Delft, where he worked on the characterization of additively manufactured steels subjected to QP treatment.
As of June 5, 2025, he holds the position of Researcher at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. Alongside his research activities, he is involved in teaching as a Teaching Assistant and Lecturer in several Mechanical Engineering courses. He has also contributed to student training through the co-supervision of multiple Master’s theses.
His main research activities focus on processes and thermal or thermomechanical treatments applied to metallic materials. His work is centered on mechanical and microstructural characterization and on investigating the relationship between process parameters and final properties.
He is a member of Associazione Italiana di Metallurgia (AIM) and, since 2022, has participated in the Technical Committee on "Trattamenti termici e metallografia" His research has been presented in various national and international journals and at numerous international conferences in the field.
