He has got a Master’s degree in Mechanical engineering at Università degli studi di Bari. After a professional experience at a machine tool manufacturing company (Mandelli, Piacenza), he has been a research assistant at the Machine tools Institute of CNR (Milano) and at the Department of mechanical engineering of Politecnico di Milano. He has then been an assistant professor at Università degli studi di Parma, and is currently an associate professor in Manufacturing technology at Politecnico di Milano.
His research interests are focused on integrated product-process development, that is, on how product design specifications (e.g. digital models, material, quality and function) can guide engineering decisions in order to reduce manufacturing time, cost and defects. Detailed topics studied include: computer-aided tolerancing of machine parts according to ASME-GD&T and ISO-GPS standards; product redesign for ease of manufacture and assembly (DFM-DFA); manufacturing cost estimation and value analysis; process improvement and software support for 3D printing and additive manufacturing techniques; CAD-based planning of mechanical assembly; simulation and defect reduction in casting and molding processes. On these topics, he has published about 70 scientific papers and has collaborated with companies in several industrial sectors (machinery and automation, energy, medical devices, dies and molds).
He has taught classes for the schools of Industrial engineering and Design of Politecnico di Milano in basic disciplines (manufacturing technology, computer-aided design) and specialized subjects (assembly and tolerancing, design for manufacturing, rapid prototyping).
